The year is 2048 and crime has risen a staggering 400%. All police officers are paired with synthetic partners called MX units. These robot officers will protect and defend their partners while upholding the letter of the law.
We follow Detective Jon Kennex as he returns to duty after being in a coma for 17 months. Upon returning to duty Jon is assigned a MX unit and shortly after pushes the robot out of his moving car. His boss Captain Maldonado pairs Jon with a decommissioned DRN unit named Dorian hoping the more human like robot will be good for Jon. DRN’s were taken out of services because they were found to have emotional breaking points.
The same crime syndicate that ambushed Jon 17 months before attacks police headquarters. They are looking for something in the evidence locker and it turns out to be a female robots head. The police have no idea what the crime ring is looking for but capture one of the members and hope to garner info from him.
The sex trade is legal now and “Bang-Bots” are all the rage. They look just like real humans and yes there are female and male Bots. The only thing that distinguishes them from humans is the feel of their skin. It is illegal to use human DNA to make more realistic skin for the Bots but that doesn’t stop people from trying. Women are being kidnapped and their DNA stolen for this purpose. Of Course Jon and Dorian shut down the bad guys and save the captured women.
A new drug called “Benz” is the new Meth of the future and there are many who want to capitalize on this new addiction. A “cook” is needed to produce the drug so Jon and Dorian enlist the help of Rudy, the precinct lab guy, to go under cover. Dorian decapitates a robot working for drug ring and Jon captures and kills the Kingpin who is a police Captain. So there are bad cops in the future too.
The police have come up with new ways to harbor witnesses who need to testify in high-profile cases. Safe houses are equipped with Hologram devices that allow the witness to testify in court without ever leaving the safe houses. Not all plans are fail safe however and Jon and Dorian must find the people responsible for breaching the security of one of these facilities. A witness who has been surgically enhanced with psychic abilities helps them break the case.
While human enhancements are legal, the sale of used Bio Organs is not. There is a black market for Bio Hearts that is blackmailing the recipients into paying gross amounts of monthly fees or their hearts will be shut down. Not everyone can afford to pay the fee and Jon and Dorian search out the extortionist.
Even in the future being popular and getting revenge is still an issue. One killer decides to broadcast the deaths of those he seeks to punish. A neck brace equipped with a bomb is placed on the victims and a webcam in the brace allows the viewers to witness the “event.”
Jon is captured and fitted with said bomb brace and must free himself before time runs out.
Detective Stahl tracks down the mastermind and Dorian captures him in time to save Jon.
Assassins seem to have stepped up their game because now they posses bullets that are programmable with face recognition . This enables the shooter to track a target anywhere. You are only safe underground and that is where Jon and Dorian hide a witness to protect her. The owner of this software is flush out and this stops the procurement of this advancement from being sold as a world-wide weapon.
All of our characters have evolved this season so far. We find Jon, who hated robots, start to befriend Dorian and care about his well-being and happiness. Dorian has become attached to Jon and also shows his need for privacy like all humans need. Detective Stahl, who was enhanced as a child, has a growing attraction for Jon. Rudy, the lab guy, is lonely and has a dream of being an undercover detective. Finally we have Captain Maldanado. She is married to her job and the officers of the precinct are her family. Though she does seem to have a soft spot for Jon that I’m sure we will find the meaning behind.
So, we are all caught up and I can’t wait to see what the next half of the season brings.
