Amazing Race – “Fishy Kiss” – Nov 25 recap

We’re off to Amsterdam. Well, after the teams figure out that the flag they were given as a clue is for the Netherlands and not France.  Tho, as you can see, they can be confused with each other, so let’s not be too hard on them…for now.

So, we see Trey & Lexi totally convinced they’re going to France. So sure they were heading to Paris. Until The Chippendales pointed them in the right direction. It would have been interesting if they had booked a flight & landed in Paris. Or would production have stopped them? Ehh, maybe next time. Anyway, again the teams are faced with several choices of flights and layovers. Jaymes & James opt for a direct flight, departing 10:45 am, arriving 12:15 pm. No narrow lay-over windows for them.  The Twinnies risk an earlier flight with a Rome connection, arriving in Amsterdam at 11:30 am.  Brent and Josh are set to arrive at 4:35 pm via Oslo, Norway. Trey & Lexi are scheduled to arrive at 1:05 pm.

And Abbie & Ryan? Well, I doubt they will chose Frankfurt as a connecting airport again.  Last time they missed their connection thru Frankfurt, and this week, even with double booking two connecting flights in case their early morning flight arrived in Frankfurt too late to catch the first connection flight…they thought they’d be safe. Oh how wrong they were.  Now their morning flight did arrive in Frankfurt on time, they would be able to catch the early connection. Not so fast! Seems they didnt check in all the way through after they bought the tickets. So no check-in, no boarding. That equals missed flight. No problem, right? They planned ahead and double booked a second connection. They get on that plane. And sat on it. And sat. Mechanical problems. No flight. Passengers would be put on another flight. Did they pack bad Karma in their luggage? Guess who is getting to Amsterdam really, really late.

Natalie and Nadiya arrive in Amsterdam first and find the first clue. It’s a Fast Forward, where they must make their way to the Van Gogh Cafe and find The Floating Dutchman and eat 5 herring apiece before the water bus gets to the next stop. If they can complete this, they will bypass all the tasks on this leg. The Twinnies complete it, go straight to the Pit Stop, step on the mat first and each wins $5000.  We won because they finished early and we didn’t have to hear their shrill voices the rest of the show.

Jaymes & James get to the DETOUR first and between ‘Back in Time’ or ‘Organ Grind’, they choose to collect tips in the Organ grinder challenge. When the crowds get thin and the tips dry up,the boys revert to their Chippendales forte, take off their shirts, put on the cuffs and collar, and whip up the crowd to complete the task. It also gives us another gratuitous peek at their fitness, and let’s me post this picture (no shame here).

The guys go to the next clue box  and it’s a “Double U-Turn”.  As they agreed to with Trey & Lexi and Natalie & Nadiya, the first to the U-Turn would use it on Ryan & Abbie, with the second team to arrive using it on whomever used the 1st U-turn. This, in effect, blocks out the double aspect and keeps their trio safe.  The Chips U-Turn Abbie & Ryan and head to the next clue site, which is the ROADBLOCK. We revisit a past TAR task where teams must pole vault over a canal to retrieve a pair of wooden shoes with the clue to the PitStop and pole vault back over the canal. James gets over and back on the first try and checks in to the PitStop second.

Trey & Lexi also complete  the Organ grinder task, get to the U-Turn and do their part of picking Jaymes & James as planned.  Ryan & Abbie will now be the only ones having to complete the U-Turn (which means they have to go back and do the other DETOUR task they avoided before continuing on to the canal jumping).  Trey & Lexi also do the canal vaulting with ease and check-in third at the PitStop.

Josh & Brent and Abbie & Ryan both decide to do the ‘Back in Time’ task, in which they must recreate a Rembrant masterpiece with the help of live extras in period piece.  Both teams complete the challenge and upon getting to the ‘Double U-Turn’ realize what was done.  Abbie & Ryan must go back to do the Organ grinder task too. The goat boys are torn whether to stay or not until their dim bulb makes them realize they have to step on the mat first, so they go thru the canal jumping task and check-in at the PitStop 4th.

Ryan and Abbie slog along. Knowing things dont look good. Feeling frustrated and upset. We also get to see the first team get dunked in the canal as Ryan repeatedly missed the other bank, no doubt from not having the oomph to compete anymore.  Ryan thinks the Chippendales were being rotten to do that to them, they liked them. But sorry Ryan, that’s the game, its nearing the end, you were strong, it had to be done. You’d do the same if arrived first.  So as Ryan and Abbie check in last, Phil confirms they have been eliminated from the race. And with that, the $2 million top prize disappears. Ryan & Abbie had won the first leg, and if they won the last leg,the prize would have doubled. The remaining 4 teams will still be competing for a cool million.

Previews look intense for next week as the end gets closer. We’ll soon have our final 3 Teams & the final Race to the finish.
