Last week’s cliffhanger ending left TAR fans wondering the fates of Rockers Abba & James (will they find their passports?), and what would happen to Josh & Brent and Ryan & Abbie after missing their flight, being a half day behind everyone else, and the goat farmers floundering in the pool? Tonight we find out and a whole lot more as The Amazing Race 21 continues in Moscow, Russia.
James and Abba are still wandering the streets of Moscow looking for their possessions which they left in the cab that went missing. Visits to the police and waiting in their hotel room take up much of their time.
At the swimming center, Josh & Brent are told by the coach the center is closing, it is late, and to give their best try one more time. They fail to master the routine but get their clue – with a 4 hour penalty for not completing the task.
As they finally get to the Pit Stop together, Phil informs them that because another team is struggling still, Abbie & Ryan are checked in as #4 and Josh & Brent are in fifth. The goat boys will have their 4 hour penalty charged to the start of the next leg. James & Abba decide to check in as well, minus the passport, and expect to hear bad news from Phil. Instead they are told it is a non-elimination leg, they can continue without the passport for now, they will have to complete a speed bump as a penalty, but if they do not find the passport, they risk not being able to continue at the next Pit Stop (which means it is needed to leave Russia for the next leg).
Well, so much for that ‘cliffhanger’. We’re now all caught up. Let the Race continue.
Morning has Trey & Lexi off first by cab to the Agricultural Academy for the next clue. Shortly after Team Chippendales heads on their way. Jaymes & James had the better cab driver as he gets them there first. Trey & Lexi’s cabbie was a dunce, didn’t know where he was going and dropped them off in a seedy part of the city. They got a different cab and after more confusion they eventually found the place. Once the Academy opens, they get their clue. It’s a Roadblock, “In the Zone” where one member needs to calculate the time of day of 5 cities in the various time zones of Russia. Jaymes and Lexi agree to do the task together as they sit in a school-like auditorium where a professor gives them timed rounds to give their answers. Easy? Not exactly. A screen flashes a time in Moscow, then a screen flashes a map of Russia with its timezones (all marked in relation to Greenwich Mean Time GMT, where Moscow’s timezone is marked +4 and successive zones on the map read +6, +8, +10 etc.). The final screen is the same map but with city names on it. After many many attempts it finally dawns on them they are adding the time wrong and both give the correct answers…and get the next clue.
And it’s a Detour. “Movers or Shakers”. In ‘Movers’, teams must learn a Russian soldier dance routine. In ‘Shakers’, teams must attend a cocktail party with people who are lookalikes to historical Russian figures and identify 7 of them.
Jaymes & James and Lexi & Trey all decide to go do the Movers challenge.
Chips get their cab right away. Trey & Lexi can’t flag one down. So Jaymes & James have their cabbie stop and help hail a cab for them. It’s nice to see good sportsmanship and the boys helping. Super nice just seem natural for them. Pay it forward.
The dance routine is especially hard for James as he is still suffering from a sprained ankle from earlier in the race. He’s in obvious pain with some of the moves, but they finish the task on the second try. Lexi as a dance instructor gets Ryan learning the steps fast and they complete it in one try, neck and neck behind Team Chippendales. Their clue this time? Race to the Pit Stop. Karma shines down on the Chips as they easily get a cab again and get their first taste of a first place finish. Reward is a vacation trip to Costa Rica. Congrats guys!! Trey and Lexi arrive shortly after in second place.
During all this, we see the Rockers (James and Abba) still looking for the missing passport, using someone’s phone to call the US Embassy for an emergency passport, and a few snippets of them doing segments of the challenges.
The Twinnies used their Express Pass they won earlier to skip the Time Zone challenge and went right to the ‘Movers’ dance routine. One of them kept splitting the seat of the uniform pants she was wearing, tho after a costume change into a new pair, they completed the task and arrived at the Pit Stop in third.
Abbie & Ryan also breezed thru the Movers dance routine, which was not the case when Ryan attempted the Time Zone task. He, too, totally got confused with the trick to adding the correct time. But they were able to still finish in fourth.
Josh and Brent got the Time Zone on the first try as he understood the trick in adding the times right away. They then did the “Shakers’ detour and did quite well recognizing the historical figures. They got to the Pit Stop in fifth.
As for James and Abba, the passport never showed up, and by the rules they could not continue and were eliminated.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they then went out and knocked back a few vodka shots.
Na Zdarovye !!
