In speaking with Amy Hanley of “Sin City Rules” and after reading her mom Wendy Mazaros‘, book “Vegas Rag Doll,” I was intrigued by their story, so I decided to do a little digging to learn more. Why am I digging? I’m digging because two people who allege to be distant relatives have taken to the inter-webs to discredit Amy and Wendy’s story. What I’ve found is about to blow your mind, ok maybe not blow your mind, but it will definitely give you an insight into the Hanley family history.
During my exhaustive internet search I learned a great deal about Amy’s father, mob boss and hitman Tom Hanley, and her half-brother and gangster Andrew Gramby “Gramby” Hanley, both or one were allegedly involved in the killings of Jimmy Hoffa, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and setting the fire that destroyed the Las Vegas Sun in November of 1963. In Wendy’s book she mentions that Gramby hints at the father and son duo’s involvement in the assassination of JFK, is it true, all I can tell you is that I have been unable to find any information that implicates the father and son mob team.
After speaking with Amy, listening to her accounts of conversations with law enforcement investigators, FBI agents, former associates, retired and active judges, her mom, and researching the Hanley family, there’s no doubt in my mind that Amy grew up immersed in the culture of the mob. What you’re going to read this series is a “Mob Shakedown” of Amy’s family history supported by items found across the internet.
The alleged family members, who claim to be second cousins, dispute the fact that Amy’s father was as Las Vegas mob boss, in fact they point to this Wikipedia list of mobsters by city to support their claims; however, if you read “criteria for inclusion” it states “Individuals should have an existing Wikipedia article. Names added without an article will be removed.” Well, there is no Wikipedia page on Tom Hanley, so it makes sense he wouldn’t be included on the list of mobsters.
The second cousins further attempt to cast doubt on Tom’s role as a Las Vegas mob boss and hitman, they claim Tom couldn’t have been a member of the mob because he wasn’t Italian. It’s a common misconception that one must be Italian to join the mob, hell if that were true John A. Gotti, whose mother was of Russian descent, and “Cadillac” Frank Salemme, former boss of the Patriarca family in Providence, Rhode Island, who was half Irish wouldn’t be mobsters. The most notable mob members who had no Italian lineage at all include Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, who was involved with the Genovese crime family, born to Jewish parents from Ukraine. Let’s not forget James Joseph “Whitey” Bulger who was born to parents of Irish and Canadian decent. Whitey ran the Boston the Mob dating back to the 1950′s.
Due to the stigma that’s been placed on being part of the mob I understand not everyone is eager to embrace their family’s mob association. There’s no denying with over 900+ articles from newspapers in Las Vegas alone that Tom Hanley was in fact a Vegas Mob Boss. One article after Hanley’s death quips “His name appeared in more banner headlines in Las Vegas than United States presidents,” see image below. There’s no hiding from the truth!
