Back Ends and Donkey Booties (Recap of RHOA, S5, Ep11)

The season’s picking up steam over in Atlanta…

Nene Moving InNeNe rented a beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills and Kenya sent over some of her stored furniture for NeNe to use. Kenya sent all of her excess! Nene name drops a couple of her neighbors – Larry Flint and Mel Gibson? Really NeNe, those neighbors are not ones to be excited about having. As Gregg, NeNe and Brentt put together their new space, they discuss how she has structured the deal as a rent with the option to purchase. Smart gal!

NeNe wants Gregg to step up as a Mister Mom, but they problem is that she won’t relinquish control to let Gregg do it! She wants to keep everything on her plate and tell Gregg he has to pick it up.

NeNe’s working long hours as early as 5 a.m. to as late as 9 p.m. on the set of the New Normal. She’s happy that she now has a trailer that is her own. She hated being a “guest star” on Glee, so this is a real step up! She can decorate it and make it her own.

Kandi is throwing a surprise birthday party/anniversary of their first kiss party for Todd inviting family and friends from all around, escorting him by helicopter. Riley won’t be able to attend the party, but she’s helping her mom bake a cake for it. Too cute!

Lori and Che (Kenya’s aunt and cousin) arrive at Kenya’s house to catch up. Kenya’s cooking, which surprises both Lori and Che. Kenya lets them know that her and Walter broke up. Che lets it out that Walter once asked her out on a date too and that she thinks Walter is gay. Poor Kenya. Why is she finding out all of this now?

Kenya meets up with Phaedra at a local gym to show her the ideas for “Donkey Booty” video. Phaedra loses the southern belle in her while showing off her donkey booty – shaking her booty, asking whether there are butt cams. Apollo showcases two of the moves to be presented in the video – the “Booty Drop” and the “Funky Donkey”.

Even though no contract has been signed and they just figured out what they’ll be putting in the video, Kenya has already secured a distribution deal. I say it’s great to be proactive, but you have to be hired first, right? She estimates that the production budget is around $100,000. I’ve done a little in the world of film and television and that’s a lot! She’s not bringing a well-known name as the production company (sorry Kenya before this show, I didn’t know that you had one). Phaedra insists that she needs to consult her attorney.

Her attorney, Eric, gives his opinion on the deal memo, suggesting reasonable budget cuts such as less cameras and not building a set. He said that Kenya agreed that the changes are good, but when she arrives at Phaedra’s office, she has a different tune. Kenya was expecting 10% of the back end (which means, 10% of every video sold) since she’s not wanting a fee at the start.

Phaedra got a second opinion from Todd who I believe is a producer on THIS show, who says he could do it for a lot less money. Kenya’s upset because she usually gets 50% of the pie and considered it a friendly gift to only take 10%. I don’t know if it’s legitimate, but Kenya didn’t present it upfront to secure the contract FIRST, before doing “all this work”.

Phaedra’s considering another production deal since she feels that Kenya’s unreasonable. Phaedra makes it clear that she’s the business mind in her and Apollo’s relationship and she’s willing to forgo any friendship with Kenya over this argument. I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side.

We only see Porsha for a minute – enjoying breakfast in bed made by Kordell to work on conceiving twins for the couple. Glaringly absent are the yams!

surprising toddEveryone’s invited to Todd’s birthday party. Phaedra made customized placemats. Too cute! Kandi and Todd fly to the party and even though he sees the party, but doesn’t know his mom was coming. She truly surprised him! They look so happy together.

Kenya is annoyed that Phaedra didn’t make it her life’s goal to reconcile with Kenya before the party and acts cordial. Kenya is ready to have some words with someone who is mildly associated with the project. She seizes an opportunity to talk to Apollo hoping that they can come to a consensus, and then convince Phaedra. But Phaedra’s not having it! Kenya then tries to talk to Todd about his and Phaedra’s conversation. Kandi shut it down fast!

Kenya arrives at Cynthia’s agency to discuss casting the donkey booty video. Cynthia is pissed that Phaedra tweeted that the agency was casting before getting a contract together – and canceled the casting until they came to terms. Phaedra and Kenya should learn from that. Cynthia knows that business is not friendship and made sure that everyone was on the same page before someone did a bunch of work (ex. “6 weeks worth”) for free. Kenya, of course, let Cynthia know of her dispute with Phaedra, that she doesn’t work for free either – but she already had!

Then Kenya drops the bombshell – she ain’t doing it. She doesn’t want to work with “ass clowns” and storms out without saying goodbye.

They both had points – Kenya should be paid, but she shouldn’t start working on it until the terms have been solidified. Doesn’t twenty years of running a production company teach her that?

But it looks like next week will be good – Kenya is producing a “Stallion Booty” video. Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it though.
