I MAY JUST BAFTA

bafta-slice–

Yes, it is award time. Tis the season when film and television creators, actor’s, directors, producers and technicians spend countless hours and resources to gain the highest accolades from their piers and the industry. Big awards mean big business. The BAFTAS  nominations for 2012 season are in. Two surprises were “Sam Mendes‘ director of Skyfall and “Steven Spielberg’s”  Lincoln were some how overlooked for Best Director. As if these great films somehow directed themselves. “Peter Jackson” is also not sitting at the big table this year for The Hobbit. No best film nod for Quentin Tarantino’s delirious and brilliant Django Unchained, So let us dive into who did get attention this year.

Javier Bardem performance was one of his best ever and now honored with a Best Supporting Actor BAFTA for Skyfall. Helen Mirren got an obvious nod for her delicious characterization
of the inspiration behind the master in Hitchcock. Sally Fields also recognized for her brilliant portrait of Mary (Molly) Lincoln. Now why is it that producers somehow forget just how good the two-time Academy Award winning actress really is and yet she seems to have to fight for every role. Some actresses can come on read the phone book and pick up a nomination, but this year the ladies had to earn it the old fashion way with talent.

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln predictably leads the way in this year’s Bafta nomination list with 10 nods, with Les Mirerables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo crowding in behind. A surprise awards contender, perhaps, given its cool critical reception, is Joe Wright’s version of “Anna Karenina” with six nominations.

Daniel Day-Lewis. and Hugh Jackman give an excellent performances, though, and in any other year, Jackman would be an odds-on favorite, and the film itself is a unique and in its way remarkable spectacle. Day-Lewis is considered the best Actor of our day and his character development for Lincoln took a year to research may prove to be the front-runner after all.

Not a great year to be British in film.
