What a fortunate set of events, that the Te’o family hired the same spokesperson as the one that represents, Katie Couric!
Katie has landed the first televised interview with Manti Te’o.
Manti Te’o is the central character in one of the most bizarre and controversial stories of the year. In September of 2012, football fans around the country, felt for the star player at Notre Dame who lost his grandmother and then six hours later his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua. Upon hearing the tragic news, Te’o led the Fighting Irish to a sound victory over Michigan State. A more inspirational story has never existed in college football. Te’o has talked openly about his girlfriend, their love and devotion, their talks and visits as he did publicity for his team, his walk as a hopeful Heisman Trophy Winner and a first round NFL draft pick. It appeared his stories and details of the relationship came forth more often and elaborately as his stardom rose.
Easy to understand, the shock felt ’round the nation as Deadspin.com broke the story that Lennay Kekua did not exist. Questions are swirling as Manti now claims, he was duped. He is hurt and humiliated.
We can assume, Friday night’s two and half hour interview with ESPN’S Jeremy Schaap was a practice run as Te’o's representative insisted it be off camera.
Te’o's parents, Brian and Ottilia, will appear with him in the interview. Hopefully, they can clear up the layers of the story where Te’o's Dad had told reporters, Lennay had traveled to Hawaii a few times and Manti had met with her there.
I hope Katie gets to the truth as successfully as she landed the interview.
The interview will be televised Thursday, on Katie’s syndicated talk show, with excerpts being shown in advance on “Good Morning America” and other ABC news programs.
