We begin in fairy tale land where Mary Margaret/Snow and Emma are still hanging out with Mulan and Sleeping Beauty. They are on their way back to camp after escaping the ogres and discover that everyone has been killed by Cora, except one person, who viewers will recognize as the pirate from last week’s episode. You know, the one who wants to kill Rumplestiltskin. Emma already suspects something is off.
Oh now we are in Storybrook, and Charming/David punches Dr. Whale, the guy Snow slept with. But they are cool kind of afterwards and after being asked, Charming confirms he is trying to find a way back to fairy tale world. Meanwhile Regina goes to see Dr. Hopper/Jiminy Cricket. She is like a drug addict and her drug is magic.
During a flashback we learn that Rumplestiltskin is the one who taught her to use black magic and rip hearts out of people. She was a reluctant student.
Then we go back to Storybrook and Regina reveals she still has her fiance, Daniel, frozen in her family mausoleum. She leaves Dr. Hopper’s and thinks she sees Daniel standing on the street corner, so she goes to the mausoleum where she discovers Daniel is missing.
As this is going on, Charming is teaching Henry knightly things like taking care of a horse, and he leaves him at the stables.
Regina has another flashback and she is at Rumplestiltskin’s place and he wants to know what is holding her back. She wants to bring Daniel back from the dead, but he can’t. The Mad Hatter/Jefferson is also at Rumplestiltskin’s and he is like, I can help you. Turns out he brought a doctor from another world (they don’t say it, but it’s totally Dr. Frankenstein) who claims he can bring someone back to life but he needs a stronger heart that is preserved by magic. Rumplestiltskin no longer wants to teach Regina.
They are in luck. Regina’s mother Cora has a whole vault filled with hearts.
In Storybrook, Regina ends up going to the former mental ward (where she had Belle locked up) and finds that Dr. Whale has been attacked. She knew that Dr. Whale had stolen a heart from him and she knew he took Daniel. He tells her Daniel is a monster now.
In the regular hospital, Charming who is acting sheriff, is not thrilled with Regina and she ends up having to tell him what is going on. Regina tells him she thinks he is confused and living out his last moments, and is probably going to go for the stable. Do you know who is at the stable alone? Henry. Henry’s horse runs away, and all of the other horses are obviously nervous.
In fairy tale world, the ladies have tied the pirate to a tree and called the ogres since this guy just won’t tell him who he really is. He ends up spilling because no one wants to die by ogre attacks, and he says he can help them. Cora might be able to get a portal to Storybrook from the ashes of the wardrobe, but she needs a compass and he will help them get it. The compass is at the top of a beanstalk. Oh and the pirate is Captain Hook.
Daniel attacks Henry. But Charming and Regina show up just in time. She doesn’t want to use magic and is kind of having a breakdown over seeing Daniel. He goes to attack her, but she says she loves him. He finally recognizes her and says to let him go, he is in pain. She does.
Around this time she flashes back to her time in fairy tale world when the Dr is helping her bring Daniel back to life. He is not successful. He was never going to be successful because he was in cahoots with Rumplestiltskin and the Mad Hatter. They give the Dr a heart and he goes back to his world where he brings his brother back to life, and he is very obviously Dr Frankenstein.
