RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race – “It Takes Two”

Written by on October 23, 2012 in RuPaul's Drag Race

They’re back Hunty!

And this isn’t the usual knock-down, drag out (ahem), RuPaul’s Drag Race…it’s All Stars! Yes, 12 fabulous queens from previous Drag Race seasons return, ready to compete for the All Star tiara and $100,000 prize. However, before they’ve had time to unpack and untuck, Ru tosses out this season’s twist…they’ll be competing as pairs. Judged together, eliminated together. Double whammy.

One by one, our queens strutted into the dressing room. Our All Stars are (with Drag Race season):

Pandora Boxx (2)… Latrice Royale (4) … Yara Sofia (3) … Shannel (1) … Raven (2) … Alexis Mateo (3) …

Chad Michaels (4) … Manila Luzon (3) … Mimi Imfurst (3) … Nina Flowers (1) … Jujubee (2) … Tammie Brown (1)

Ru then announces the twist. Collectively, all 12 did their Taylor Swift look of shock with mouths agape. Although our queens were really shocked, and a few pissed. The eye-candy boys in their snug undies opened up a big pink box and handed out small boxes to each all-star. In their boxes were pictures of each of the other queens. On Ru’s command of ‘whip it out’, each had to hold up a picture of one they’d want to be paired with. After two rounds of whipping out their paddle pics, here is how the drag duos paired up:

Team Rujubee – Raven & Jujubee

Team Shad – Shannel & Chad

Team Brown Flowers – Tammie Brown & Nina Flowers

Team Latrila – Latrice & Manila

Team Yarlexis – Yara Sofia & Alexis Mateo

Team Mandora – Mimi Imfurst & Pandora Boxx

Teams Rujubee, Shad and Brown Flowers picked each other and matched on the first try. Teams Latrila and Mandora took a second round to match up. Which left Pandora and Mimi, ummm, stuck with each other by default. And Pandora’s box was not happy. Suffice to say, Mimi Imfurst was not anyone’s favorite to team up with, and we heard a lot of snarky comments directed her way.

The first challenge involved posing for two photo shoots. The first is called ‘half baked’, the duos pose without wigs, in mid-transformation, with them wearing their makeup that the other half applied for them. The second shoot is called ‘opposites attract’ where each has a character opposite of the other’s, posing on cubes, all while being drenched in ‘rain’. It becomes a drag queens worst nightmare, being caught in the rain in full regalia, dripping makeup, sopping wet wigs, eyelashes falling out, wet tucks…oh yeah, one queen even did the shoot naked, in face.

Joining Ru, Santino Rice & Michelle Visage at the judges table was Rachel Hunter & Ross Mathews. The runway strut was also done as pairs, with some interesting presentations. From Latrila’s Teletubby glam to Mandora’s mess of muppet fur to burlesque vixens Yarlexis.

The top two duos were Latrila and Rujubee, with Latrila winning the first challenge. Condragulations Latrila! They retire to the newly decorated All-Star lounge. Also safe were Brown Flowers and Yarlexis, leaving Mandora and Shad to lip sync for their lives. It was suprising that Team Shad was in the bottom 2. Their runway was all glam, but their photo shoots did them in according to the judges.

Lip sync time brought in another new twist. Each duo had to choose who would do the lip sync for the team. But if the non-lip syncer feels her teammate is not doing well, she can press a button which will allow them to swap places. However, each pair only has one shot at the button for the entire season.

Chad and Mimi performed the lip sync to Paula Abdul’s “Opposites Attract” (can tonight’s theme BE anymore obvious?)

Result? Team Shad was safe… Team Mandora, Pandora & Mimi, both had to sashay away.

It also seems that Mimi Imfurst sashayed all the way out of the studio since only Pandora Boxx was shown taking her framed portrait off the All-Star picture wall.

Be sure to watch the ‘Untucked’ episode following the show. There was more shade thrown you’d think an eclipse was looming. A lot of bad blood between some comes to a head, nails were slashing and tongues were cutting. Oh, and there’s a special cameo from Willem too!

It’s going to be an terrific Drag season. Let us know who your favorite team is. Who’s going to win it all?

Rupaul’s Drag Race All-Stars airs Monday’s at 9 on Logo.
