RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars – Girl Groups – recap

Written by on November 13, 2012 in RuPaul's Drag Race

As we sashay to the finish line, there are now 3 teams left. Team Shad, Team Rujubee & Team Yarlexis.  Tonight we have ‘Cheer-reading’, Girl Groups and learn who will be in the finals. Ruticipation!

First up, the mini-challenge. Teams have to prepare a cheer routine, dressed as All Star Cheerleaders for a “Cheer-Reading”. No, not reading a book or lines, ‘read’, as in busting chops of someone, being snarky, all in fun. Each team does their best shaking their pom poms, rah-rahing bitch slaps, eliciting puckered lips from those being razzed on.

Yarlexis cheered to the win, with this highlight: “Knock knock! Who’s there? Shannel. Shannel who? Exactly!”

Ru then announces the main challenge which is for each team to create an All Star Girl Group, complete with a name and mad outfits, all while lip syncing on the runway to one of  RuPaul’s song hits. The 3 songs to pick from were “Cover Girl”, “Glamazon” and “Jealous of My Boogie”. Then he springs the kicker, the song they choose will be connected to one of three guest daughters who will join each team. In walks, Kelly Osbourne (daughter of Ozzie & Sharon), Julian Hervey (daughter of Vanessa Williams) and Kady Z (daughter of Pia Zadora).

Since Yarlexis won the mini-challenge they get to pick first, and they choose ‘Cover Girl’, which gives them Kelly. Team Rujubee picked ‘Jealous of My Boogie” and got  Kady to join them. That left “Glamazon” and Julian for Chad & Shannel.

They all start to plan out their choreography and outfits. Shannel immediately takes the lead in choreography, which leads Chad to snipe that Shannel is being assertive & can’t even dance.  Kelly laments to Ru she’s pissed she wasn’t  a boy as she’s always wanted to be a drag queen. (I’ll withhold comment).  Jujubee & Raven have problems with Kady as she doesn’t want her makeup to be drag which furthers frustrates Raven to no end.

On to the runway bitches. The special guest judges tonight are Rosie Perez and original Supreme girl Mary Wilson. In keeping with the Girl Group them, Ru reminds us of Michelle Visage’s past as part of the girl group Seduction. First on the runway is Chad, Jillian & Shannel as girl group ‘Savage Sisters’. Their look is great, Jillian’s booty is highlighted, and they are spot-on with their lip-sync and choreography.  Second is Team Yarlexis with Kelly, performing as ‘Fanny Sosha’ (whatever dahell that means). Their outfits mesh, Kelly works her dragness, but the choreography is vanilla. Finally, Rujubee and Kara finish up as ‘V3′ with Jujubee giving fierce mouth (as Rosie would applaud) as they lip synced.

Judges get to nitpicking, which frankly, is all they can do since the girls are all stars and should have their tucks in order by now.  Savage Sisters get deserved kudos, as does Jillian for her amazing ass, leading Rosie Perez to comment on it’s fineness.  Fanny Sosha, tho looking good together, get picked on a so-so performance.  The most baggin’ went to V3 , Rujubee & Kara. Santino didn’t like Raven’s “terra cotta’ pantyhose, and most judges agreed that Kara’s makeup was just..normal. She didn’t seem to blend stylistically with the queens.

While the teams were in the lounge, the judges debated. Rosie brought a lot of laughs with her comments, and Mary brought everyone back in with her insight on what a girl group should look and perform like.

Chad & Shannel win the challenge and move on. This really wasn’t surprising. They WERE the best tonight. Again.

That left Raven and Alexis to lip sync to Pussycat Doll’s “Don’t Cha”.  Alexis seems to be having the upper hand so far, with Raven taking off her dress to show off her boy-abs to up the ante. When BAM!  Yara Sofia shocks everyone and hits the ‘she-mergency’ red button and tags Alexis out to finish the lip sync. This is the first time the button has been used, which lets the other half of a team tag out her teammate to finish the lip sync if she feels the other is struggling.  Only Yara must have felt that way because shock overtook the faces of Alexis, Ru and the judges.  Yara’s explanation? She felt they could add her power with Alexis’ power to beat Raven.  Ummm, sorry girlfriend, it didn’t.  Team Yarlexis was sashayed out.

So we’re down to Team Shad and Team Rujubee. From preview appearances, it seems the teams are split up and the four fight to become one of the final 3. With only 2 episodes left, we’ll soon find out just who will be on the Hall of Drag Fame wall with their picture next to RuPaul’s. The crowning of Drag Race All Stars is but a sniff away.

Yarlexis, Shad & Rujubee wait in the Lounge while the judges deliberate.
