The Amazing Race recap: “Chill Out, Freak”

The remaining seven teams of the Amazing Race continued their journey in Sunday’s episode, and the fifth leg  in the heat of Bangladesh takes a weary toll on the competitors.

Abba and James are first off the mark, but before they start out, James gets a video chat with his wife giving him an update on his father’s health. Test results say his dad is in stage 4 cancer with no remission possible. Sad news, but the guys resolve to continue racing with further determination.

James and Abba won the FastForward last week, so they set off first to the market looking for an eggplant vendor for the first clue. The teams quickly learn it’s a Roadblock and must build a scale using three bamboo poles, some rope, and some sticks, like a tripod. Then they affix some platforms and weigh a bundle of sticks against some rocks.

After trial and error (well many errors), and reassembly of the various parts, the teams get past the Roadblock and on to the Detour. This was a choice between “Straw Dogs and Bamboo Jungle” .

Straw Dogs had a team untangle fibers on nails to prepare twenty bundles of jute straw and deliver the completed straw to the loom machines. Abby and Ryan were the only ones to take this challenge and it took them a second try to get the straw detangled properly.

Bamboo Jungle had them carry  3 different lengths of bamboo poles, collecting a total of 40 poles, stack on a bike powered cart, and deliver thru town to a construction site. Needless to say the bamboo was very heavy. Numerous times the bystanders were whacked with the tail end of the long poles as they manuevered thru the bamboo lot and pedaled thru the streets. It was also hot and very humid which slowly took a toll on the teams.

Abba and James complete the bamboo task first, and their wide lead allowed them to arrive at the pit stop, Lok Shilpa Jadughar, while the other teams were still on Detour. They won the second time in a row and received a trip to Malaysia’s tropical rainforest.

Ryan and Abby arrived at the pit stop from the jute mill in second place. Ryan’s boast during the show to be the team to win the most 1st place finishes..well, came up short…again.

Meanwhile, at the bamboo lot, the Twinnies are doing their best not to poke children’s eyes out as they whip their bike cart thru the streets.  There’s a mad rush by the other teams to stack and tie up the bamboo bundles…and in doing so, the Chippendales leave 3 poles on the ground when they head to the construction site. We also find out thru Jaymes that they are eating on a budget, which isn’t a good idea when doing heavy lifting, in the heat, in the humidity, and sweating so much. Of course, they dont find out they were 3 poles short until they get to the construction site and need to return. They collapse in the sand, trying to recoup, rehydrate. But like every other challenge, their attitude gets them thru it. And unlike other teams in this race, and races past, we don’t see them bicker and snap. They regroup, refocus and have each other’s back.

As they leave the bamboo challenge and head to the pitstop, the twins finished in the third place, followed by Rob & Kelley and Trey & Lexi in the fourth and fifth place respectively.

Goat farmers Josh & Brent have been in last place the entire show, struggling with each challenge. But with the Chip’s flub and having to return for their dropped bamboo, will they be able to catch up? The battle for last place ends with Jaymes and James coming in 6th …including a major face plant by Jaymes as he trips going thru the gate. I’d say he tops the fall by BigBrother’s Brendon on his season.

Josh & Brent come in last. However, it’s the first non-elimination round so they survive another day.
