OH MRS. GARRETT! Charlotte Rae, best known for playing Edna Garrett on “The Facts of Life” (the boarding school we all wanted to attend) has an incredible story to tell and is currently book-shopping a manuscript! Garrett hopes that publishers are biting as she tells the story of her marriage to famous composer John Strauss. According to her, after the couple moved into a new house, Strauss popped right out of the closet….and even though they were in a new abode, we don’t mean literally.
He was gay and had been unfaithful in their marriage. The book describes the shock and sting of learning the news. With two children, the couple divorced after Garrett learned the news.
“First came the shock of what he had done behind my back, then the sting of being deceived for years,” she writes. “All I could feel was the betrayal and, worse than that, my shame.”
“John’s secret confirmed my feelings of inferiority,” Rae writes. “That I was less than a woman . . . That I didn’t deserve to be loved and valued.”
It’s rumored that the book also covers other interesting areas of her life, including the day-to-day challenges of working with an all-teenage cast. We at TVFishbowl think this will be a great read and plan to read it with our vests on.
